ANTENATAL CONSULTATION SCHEDULE
8-28 weeks: Once a month.
28-36 weeks: Once every 2 weeks.
36 weeks onwards: once a week until delivery
listening to baby heart beat

Initial visit:
During your initial booking appointment, we will gather comprehensive information regarding your medical, family, and obstetric history. This will encompass details about any previous surgeries, chronic health conditions, and current medications. You will also need to provide your pregnancy blood test results and ultrasound reports for review, if you have these. We will check your vital signs, calculate your due date based on your last menstrual period, conduct an abdominal examination. Following this assessment, we will arrange your next follow-up visit.

Follow up visits:
During your pregnancy check-ups, several important assessments will be conducted to monitor your pregnancy. These include measuring the fundal height of the uterus, palpating to determine the baby’s position, and listening to the fetal heartbeat. Additionally, your blood pressure and pulse will be taken, and a urine test will be performed to check for signs of infection, glucose, or protein that may indicate potential complications. We will also assess for edema and record your weight, while discussing any pregnancy-related concerns you may have. Each consultation is an opportunity for ongoing education, where you will discover new and exciting information.

During some antenatal visits we will also discuss labour signs, contraction monitoring, and when to contact us (typically during active labour). Furthermore, we will review your birth plan and the post-birth procedures, such as delayed cord clamping, skin-to-skin contact, etc. We will also engage in birth planning and encourage you to bring any questions you have, as we are always ready to provide answers and support.

Postnatal assessments for both mother and baby will be conducted around days 1, 3, 7, and 10 following the birth (more if needed).
For the mother, vital signs, breast condition, bleeding, fundal height, and stitches (if suturing was performed in the event of tearing) will be assessed. The baby will be evaluated for jaundice, condition of the umbilical cord stump, vital signs, signs of eye infection, weight, breastfeeding support, etc.

Did you know that midwives are the only healthcare providers that provide care for both mothers and their newborns together after birth? By offering early postpartum visits either in the comfort of your home or at our home birth room, we ensure that our clients experience a supportive transition into motherhood. This approach allows for simultaneous assessments of both you and your baby, making those initial days of postpartum life smoother and more manageable.

If all is well after these visits, parents may proceed to make the first appointment with a paediatrician of their choice. The baby will also be referred to the baby clinic for further weight checks and care. We provide the Road to Health booklet as well as the birth notification required by the Department of Home Affairs.

water birth

You can choose to have a home water birth at your residence or at our fully equipped birth room in Somerset West.

To qualify for a home water birth, you need to be considered a low-risk mother. Your midwife will evaluate your suitability for a home birth based on your health, pregnancy history, and overall profile.

A water birth means at least part of your labour, delivery, or both happen while you are in a birth pool filled with warm water.
Many women choose this method due to its potential to alleviate pain and enhance overall satisfaction with the birthing experience. If you find comfort in warm baths for relaxation and stress relief, a water birth might be an appealing option. The warm water promotes relaxation, which can lead to the release of pain-relieving hormones while reducing stress. Additionally, being in water allows for greater mobility, enabling mothers to find more comfortable positions during labour. Improved circulation in the water can facilitate more effective contractions and better oxygen delivery to the baby, while the relaxed state of the body may lower the risk of tearing. Furthermore, the water creates a private and focused environment, enhancing the overall birthing experience.
